Paul Finebaum blasts commissioners when discussing potential changes to College Football Playoff
On Sunday, FBS commissioners, along with the presidents and chancellors who control the College Football Playoff met to discuss potential changes to the playoff next year. While numerous issues were reportedly addressed at the meeting, no official changes to the CFP format were agreed upon.
During an appearance on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum tore into those responsible for their inaction.
“I would have been surprised if anything had happened, knowing a lot of the people that sit in this room,” Finebaum said. “They really aren’t concerned about the greater good of college football. They’re concerned about their own leagues, and that’s why we continue to have all these conversations about this.
“I’m pretty confident it will be corrected for the next one, not next year, but the year after. But I don’t know why these folks have to be so stubborn, but they are. And do they mind all the hullabaloo? Probably not. In their own in their own ways, they probably think it’s good for the game, but I don’t think it is. This system needed to be cleaned up for next year and I sincerely doubt it will be.”
Those at the meeting were expected to discuss expanding the CFP, delaying neutral site games until the semifinals round and, most notably, adjusting the current rule of the four highest-ranked conference champions automatically receiving the top four seeds.

Many fans criticized the latter rule this year when teams like Boise State and Arizona State received byes while programs like Texas were forced to play every game. Nonetheless, it won’t be easy for the CFP Management Committee to make changes.
For a rule to change, there must be a unanimous vote. With conference commissioners having conflicted interests, it’ll always be a challenge for a change to acquire complete agreement. Finebaum doesn’t expect any changes to receive a unanimous vote this year.
“That’s the issue,” Finebaum said. “We are entering, after tonight, the final year of the original agreement, and somebody put unanimity in there. And that’s hard. It’s hard to ever get anybody to agree completely, and that’s why I don’t think we’ll have the results.
“If they walked out of there yesterday without unanimity. I can’t imagine what would change today when they go back in the meeting for a few more hours.”
