Paul Finebaum joined McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning to drop some knowledge on Billy Napier and the Florida Gators, explaining what’s at stake for the program in Week 3 against Texas A&M.

After a drubbing at the hands of the Miami Hurricanes in Week 1, Florida bounced back with a win in Week 2, but this weekend’s clash with the Aggies is paramount to their season, as the Gators tough schedule will come into play later this season. They need the wins wherever they can get them.

McElroy set the stage for the importance of the game: “It feels like the most important game in the history of Florida football. I don’t say that tongue in cheek, but like, it’s going to get dark, really, really quick before dawn if, in fact, they lose this one at home, and they’re now 0-2 against Power Five competition at the swamp,” he prefaced. “So, how big is this one for Billy Napier?”

Evidently, Finebaum believes a win over the Aggies will mean everything to the Gators this weekend, as a loss could completely destroy any confidence Florida fans have in their coach.

“You can’t put too much on this game,” Finebaum said sarcastically, echoing the importance for Napier and the Gators. “A loss, essentially, you know, you pull the curtain down on the season, and you can start to debate and argue and rationalize, but from a fan standpoint, there would be no confidence in Billy Napier. Now, Greg, I don’t know what the administration is thinking. I mean, I know what they tell us, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what they’re thinking. That’s just what they’re saying.

“So, if you start out 1-2, and you have the schedule that we all agree is — by the way, that schedule got a little bit easier Saturday with Kentucky, but it’s still frightening — it’s still a frightening finish. You look at two losses after next Saturday, then you have Tennessee, which would be a third loss, and then you have the run at the end, which would put you at either .500 or below, and I don’t know how that would contend, to keep Billy Napier as the head coach.”

When Texas A&M and Florida take the field, the stakes will be ginormous for both programs, as a win would get their seasons back on the right track. The Aggies and the Gators will face off on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET, and the loser’s confidence will certainly take a hit.
