Paul Finebaum, Heather Dinich: SEC is in 'big trouble' in College Football Playoff
The SEC is in big trouble going into the final weekend of the regular season, as it pertains to the College Football Playoff.
ESPN’s Paul Finebaum and Heather Dinich saw the chaos last weekend and then the latest rankings, which featured plenty of movement. The SEC currently has three teams in the bracket but it could get worse.
There’s a lot on the line this final weekend, as well as conference championship weekend.
“My contract does not allow me to say the SEC is in trouble, but I’m going to violate it right here,” Finebaum said on Get Up. “The SEC is in very big trouble, and it really is their own fault. Alabama did it to themselves on Saturday, literally laying the biggest egg of the entire season, losing 24-3 against a five loss team. And then, of course, Ole Miss did it as well.
“But most people are gravitating to the Alabama story today, because even after that, people in Alabama, as you know Matt, there’s still a chance today. There’s not much of a chance at all.”
Alabama and Ole Miss, as Finebaum alluded to, were the biggest losers in the SEC. Now just imagine if Texas A&M wins out and wins the SEC. You have a three loss team getting in and more chaos ensues for the conference!

College Football Playoff rankings revealed
“Well, Matt, I think that the SEC is in big trouble,” Dinich said. “Just a week ago, there were five teams in the College Football Playoff bracket, and now it’s down to three: Texas, Tennessee and Georgia. And the Texas-Texas A&M game is now going to feature a team, the Aggies, that are ranked 20th by the selection committee, and a three loss team that could go win the SEC. So I think when you look at the big picture with Alabama and Ole Miss playing themselves out, that was the big takeaway.”
Alabama needs a win over Auburn in the Iron Bowl to keep themselves alive, albeit the chances are slim right now. Texas can make it easy and beat Texas A&M and rematch Georgia for the SEC Championship.
In that scenario, you likely get Georgia, Texas and Tennessee (as long as the Vols win) into the CFP. The SEC still gets three teams in.
But if Texas A&M beats Texas and then beats Georgia, a three-loss SEC Champion will get in. Then, what do you do with Georgia that made the conference championship but lost and has three losses compared to Texas and Tennessee with two? Georgia does have the head to head with both.
The SEC is certainly in a dicey situation.
