Kentucky left the nation in shock on Saturday after it defeated Alabama 117-95. During an appearance on “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning,” Paul Finebaum revealed how the surprising outcome affected his perspective on the two teams.

“Kentucky is incredibly dangerous and incredibly vulnerable at the same time,” Finebaum said. “It seems like this is the same story we’ve had with John Calipari for four or five years now.

“I always look at this team after a game like that or against Auburn and think they can win the national championship and then they go out and blow a game against LSU. They’re the ultimate roller coaster team. I think they’re also the most interesting team in the tournament.”

Kentucky looked unstoppable on Saturday, shooting 41-65 (63.1%) from the field and 13-24 (54.2%) from beyond the arc. Kentucky’s 117 points was the most the storied program has ever scored against a ranked opponent.

In the win, Kentucky forward Justin Edwards became just the the third player in school history make all of his 10+ field goal attempts. He finished with a career-high 28 points while four other fellow ‘Cats reached double figures.

Despite Kentucky’s standout showing, Finebaum isn’t convinced they will make a deep run in March. After all, the team has suffered upset losses against teams such as LSU and Gonzaga. UK isn’t the only team Finebaum is still on the fence about.

Finebaum still questioning Alabama’s future

“I’m not sure about Alabama,” Finebaum said. “They had a few people out or one or two people out, so I think Alabama’s sets up well. I mean, they have the game of the year in the SEC Saturday night so they could easily make that up.”

Alabama’s performance on Saturday wasn’t exactly encouraging. Nonetheless, the Crimson Tide aren’t the No. 1 team in the SEC by accident. The team averages 91.1 points per game, the most in the country.

Alabama’s highlight-filled outings aren’t against subpar defenses, either. Per KenPom, Alabama has faced the second-toughest schedule in the country this season. With its 19-8 record, ‘Bama has earned the No. 7 spot in the KenPom Ratings.

As Finebaum mentioned, the Crimson Tide will have another grueling matchup again this weekend when they face off against Tennessee. Kentucky won’t face the same level of competition. On Tuesday, the ‘Cats will square off against Mississippi State at 7 p.m. ET.
