As college football programs enter the season’s final stretch, they will begin to consider how they can improve over the offseason. This includes player and facility considerations but also potential staff changes. On Sunday, Paul Finebaum revealed several SEC programs have expressed interest in Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall.

“I don’t know him that well, but I’ve interviewed him. I’ve heard Sumrall’s name privately mentioned for two different second jobs that are not open at the moment,” Finebaum said. “That’s how hot he is about to become.

“I’m really glad you brought him up and there are literally two schools right now, if they made a change, he would be first on their list. That’s how well-received, and how respected he is.”

Sumrall was the head coach at Troy for the past two seasons before taking over at Tulane. In his time at Troy, he amassed a 23-4 overall record and a 14-2 mark in conference play. The Trojans won their conference title in both seasons under Sumrall.

For his efforts, he was named the 2022 Sun Belt Coach of the Year. Before Troy’s bowl game in 2023, Sumrall accepted an offer to become Tulane’s next head coach. His first campaign at the helm of the program has been nothing short of spectacular.

Tulane is 7-2 this season and 5-0 in conference play. The Green Wave’s only two losses this season are against Kansas State (34-27) and Oklahoma (34-19). Tulane’s offense has been electric, boasting 425.7 yards per game, ranking No. 40 in the country.

Despite Sumrall’s offensive genius, his background is on the defensive side of the ball. Sumrall played linebacker at Kentucky for three seasons before suffering a career-ending injury. He then served as a graduate assistant for the Wildcats before becoming the defensive line coach at San Diego.

After stints at several other programs, including Ole Miss, Sumrall returned to Kentucky and was the team’s inside linebackers coach from 2019-21. With Kentucky being 3-6 this season, it’s not a stretch to believe one of the two programs interested in Sumrall is UK.

Attempting to guess the other program would be pure speculation. However, there is no shortage of programs around the country unhappy with their current coaching staff. For now, Jon Sumrall can only keep his nose to the grindstone and continue to build his reputation around the country.
