The race in the SEC East has crescendoed to what could be the game of the college football season. No. 2 Tennessee will take their offensive circus on the road on Saturday for a showdown with No. 1 Georgia in a battle of unbeaten titans in the SEC. The matchup will have major ramifications nationally as well as serving as a de facto division title game in the conference. With so much weight on this game, Paul Finebaum believes it’ll be one of the biggest ones the sport has seen in recent years.

Finebaum shared his excitement for the game during an appearance on ‘McElroy and Cubelic In The Morning’. He said it’s even better because the hype around it has slowly built within the regular season to the point where it will draw the attention of every eye in the sport.

“I think in terms of, you know, monster games in recent years? This is one of the biggest I can remember. I’m not talking about the SEC Championship game where you have a natural matchup. But…this is probably the biggest game we’ve had since Alabama and LSU three years ago, when that was a one versus two or three, matchup,” said Finebaum. “And I think the fact that…it’s on the (SEC East) side, where we have not had these in recent years? We’ve had a lot of Alabama-LSU games that were for everything. But it is going to be a spectacle. It will be the absolute epicenter of college football.”

Based on their seasons so far, these are arguably the two best teams of this season. Georgia is the defending champion that wants to return to Atlanta as well as the College Football Playoff. Meanwhile, Tennessee is this season’s story with an unblemished run through a slate that features five AP Top-25 wins.

It has become so big that Finebaum almost feels bad for the SEC West this weekend. The Crimson Tide and Tigers are squaring off in a massive game for their division as well. However, it will pale in comparison to what will be going down in Athens on Saturday.

“In some ways that’s too bad, because the Alabama-LSU game is very important,” Finebaum said. “And the irony that the Alabama-LSU game is being completely overshadowed is absolutely remarkable.”

This game will have all the stakes anyone could ask for. The winner will essentially guarantee themself a spot in the SEC Title game. It will also put them in prime position to make the CFP. The loser won’t be thrown off track, but they’ll have some extra work to do to clean up their resume by the time the committee makes their selections. Either way, fans will be locked in on Tennessee at Georgia because, if you’re not, you might miss the best theater of the 2022 regular season.
