It’s been a slow start to the season for Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes. Now, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum has blasted Sanders and the program, declaring that the team didn’t improve from last season.

While speaking about Colorado on First Take, Finebaum explained that he’s less interested in the issues that Shedeur Sanders is dealing with and more about how his father has run the program without managing to improve the on-field product.

“He’s getting sacked. It’s the same story,” Paul Finebaum said. “I think the bigger story rather than coming down on Shedeur is his father. What kind of program is Deion Sanders running at Colorado? He promised all the changes this year. He got mad at anyone who dared to criticize and it’s the same team. They’re not even as good as they were a year ago.”

The 2023 season saw Colorado go 4-8 and Shedeur Sanders missed the final game of the year with an injury. He sustained that in a season where the offensive line gave up 56 sacks, which was 132nd in the country. That team struggled to run the ball and struggled to consistently play defense.

Now, Finebaum is seeing those same issues pop up with the Buffaloes in their second season under Deion Sanders, despite attempts to address those issues in the Transfer Portal.

“Poor Shedeur is getting killed. You can’t get sacked that many times,” Finebaum said. “He won’t make it to mid-season, let alone at the end. That score was so deceiving. I watched that game [against Nebraska] as I know you guys did and they were destroyed in the first half. That game was over. It was 28-0 and Colorado made it not even respectable but they just didn’t make it as bad as it really was. Every game now is going to be a battle for them and I just sense that Deion Sanders and this whole thing is going to come apart at some point without Shedeur, without Travis [Hunter], he’s gonna bail out.”

Nebraska is also in its second season under the current coaching staff. Matt Rhule took the Cornhuskers into Boulder last season and lost. This year, he won the rematch. That came a week after Colorado was nearly upset by an FCS program in North Dakota State.

Now, the question for Paul Finebaum goes back to how Colorado moves forward. That’s something he doesn’t expect Deion Sanders to be around for in the long term.

“I cannot imagine as much as you guys love Deion Sanders that he’s going to be able to put up with his humiliation, week after week, and I bet he’s already looking for a way out,” Finebaum concluded.

Now, Colorado is preparing for a Week 3 game against rival Colorado State as the Buffaloes look to get back into the win column.
