Pitt quarterback Nate Yarnell plans to enter NCAA transfer portal

Pitt is losing one of its top quarterbacks to the transfer portal. Nate Yarnell announced Friday morning that he is planning to enter the the portal.

Nate Yarnell made the announcement on social media in a statement. The Texas native appeared in eight games this season, passing for 1,056 yards and 10 touchdowns, with five interceptions.

Yarnell signed with Pitt as a three-star recruit and the No. 75 quarterback in the country in the class of 2021, per the On3 Industry rankings.

He did not receive any playing time as a freshman that season, before appearing in two games and making one start in 2022. Yarnell appeared in four games and made a pair of starts in 2023, before playing in nine games and making a pair of starts this past season.

One of the games Yarnell started in 2024 was against Clemson. He threw for 350 yards against the Tigers, nearly leading Pitt to an upset win. He thanked Pitt teammates and coaches in his statement.

“I have been truly blessed to play quarterback for the University of Pittsburgh,” Yarnell wrote. “I gave my heart and soul to the University for the past four years. I am proud of all we accomplished together as a team.

“I want to say thank you to my teammates, coaches, and all the support staff that I’ve had the opportunity to work with and learn from over my time as a Panther. The lessons I have learned from all of you will stay with me throughout my life.

“I am excited that I have 2 years of eligibility remaining. I am committed to using that time to be the best leader, teammate and quarterback I can be. To that end, I am entering the transfer portal as a graduate student. H2P.”
