Nobody recruits quite like LSU head coach Jay Johnson, landing shortstop Konnor Griffin out of Mississippi. Now, he will be competing with the Pittsburgh Pirates for his services heading into the 2025 season after he was selected in the 2024 MLB Draft.

Griffin was a first-round pick in going No. 9 overall. He was the first high school player to be selected in what has been a college-heavy draft at the top. But there is no denying the potential Griffin has moving forward.

A senior season full of accomplishments, arguably none were more impressive than being named the Gatorade Nation High Schol Player of the Year. Griffin had an insane .559 batting average while leading all high school players with 76 and stealing 85 bases. Nine home runs and 39 RBIs were added to the stat sheet as well.

Now, a decision will have to be made about his future. Rarely do you see players picked this high in the draft turn down the option to go professional. Johnson would gladly accept him coming to Baton Rouge for the next few years though, hopefully continuing the great tradition LSU has had over the past couple of seasons.

What MLB scouts are saying about Konnor Griffin

Griffin is undoubtedly one of the best players in the draft this year, with MLB.com providing a scouting report ahead of time. He was the No. 9 overall guy in the cycle per their rankings.

They love the power potential in the youngster, saying 30 home run seasons will certainly be possible if Griffin makes it to the Major Leagues.

There is not too much concern about his defensive placement either. Griffin projects as a quality shortstop but MLB.com states he could be a Gold Glove centerfielder as well due to great speed. Two terrific options moving forward.

“Gatorade’s National High School Player of the Year, Griffin has a big league frame at 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds and he possesses five-tool potential,” the scouting report said. “His size does add some length to his right-handed stroke and he has some timing issues he’s ironing out at the plate, but he controls the strike zone well and makes regular contact. His combination of electric bat speed, strength and leverage could translate into 30-homer power as he learns to drive the ball in the air more consistently.”
