Mike Brey is back in the news. After initially announcing his retirement from Notre Dame last month, the longtime Fighting Irish coach clarified on Monday that though he would be leaving the ND job, his coaching career is not over. So Brey is not retiring at the end of this season, but he is leaving South Bend.

That story re-sparked some previous rumors, from when Brey first announced his intentions, that the Irish may be interested in current Oklahoma head coach Porter Moser, who was previously nearby Notre Dame over at Loyola Chicago.

Well, Moser came out today and poured sand on that fire for good, saying Monday afternoon that he has “no interest” in the Notre Dame job and thinks of Oklahoma as “home.” As for any rumors that he had looked into the ND job, Moser said: “Unequivocally that’s a false report saying I pursued it.”

He later added:

“I’m a catholic kid from Chicago…I have a lot of respect for that university. With that said, I have no interest. I’ve not pursued it nor do I have any interest. Oklahoma’s my home”

It’s crystal clear now that Porter Moser does not plan to be the head coach of Notre Dame.

Report of Mike Brey NOT retiring after leaving Notre Dame

Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey reportedly will not retire at the end of the season like he originally announced, according to Jeff Goodman.

“Big news out of Notre Dame,” Goodman wrote on Twitter. “Mike Brey tells me that he is not retiring. ‘Definitely not done coaching.’ – Brey. Great to hear from one of the best guys in the business.”

Brey originally said he was going to step down as Notre Dame’s head coach at the end of season. Based on the comments reported from Goodman, Brey wanted to continue coaching, but is done at Notre Dame regardless, according to the report.

“It has been a great run for me and our program over the past two decades, but it is time for a new voice to lead this group into the future,” Brey said in a statement last month. “I want to thank our student-athletes, assistant coaches and support staff who have played such a key role in the culture we have created.”
