Providence student section chants 'F**k Ed Cooley' before win over Georgetown
College basketball fan bases in America are among some of the most passionate you’ll find out there. And the Providence Friars student section simply could not wait for the return of their old head basketball coach, Ed Cooley. He departed for the Georgetown Hoyas in March of 2023, and let’s just say the Friars’ fan base still has some very strong feelings over his departure. In the morning shootaround on Saturday, the Providence student section chanted, “F**k Ed Cooley”, before their team proceeded to win the game, 78-68.
Bensley Joseph scored 14 points to help Providence get the win on Saturday. Joseph also added 10 rebounds, pushing the Friars record to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in the Big East. Former Georgia Bulldog Jabri Abdur Rahim also hit two of his three shots from beyond the arc, pumping in 12 points.
Georgetown fell to 13-7 on the 2024 campaign.
Cooley has been the coach of the Hoyas for only one season, leading them to a 9-23 record in 2023-24. Prior to that, he spent 12 seasons as the coach at Providence, taking the Friars to seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet Sixteen in 2022. He reinvigorated their program by landing six consensus Top 100 recruits in his first three years there. The Friars also made five straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2013-2018.

His focus is on returning the Georgetown program to the days when it was a perennial threat to make the tournament. The Hoyas have a rich history but have not had a winning season in the past five years.
They struggled mightily with Patrick Ewing at the helm, even though the Hoyas did win the 2021 Big East Conference Tournament Championship. In the process, they punched their tickets to the NCAA Tournament. Outside of that, his best season with the Hoyas was a 19-14 overall record in 2018-2019. In his final two seasons there, Ewing only won 13 total games, six in 2021-2022 and seven in 2022-2023.
