Kansas quarterback Avery Johnson adds Wisconsin Badger offer
Maize (Kan.) High quarterback Avery Johnson – one of the top players in the 2023 class from the Sunflower State – has picked up an offer from the Wisconsin Badgers.
Johnson, who is 6-foot-2 and 170 pounds, shared the news about the Badger offer Sunday night on social media.
“Blessed and excited to receive an offer from The University of Wisconsin,” Johnson said in the post.
For Johnson, it is his 15th scholarship offer and the Badgers join Arizona State, Arkansas, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, TCU, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Washington State on the offer list.
The tender from Wisconsin is just the latest in what was a busy summer for the Sunflower State signal-caller. Johnson added offers from Notre Dame, Tennessee, Minnesota, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Arizona State and Florida State since June 5.

Avery Johson put up big numbers
Avery Johnson is a true dual-sport athlete, as he stars in football and basketball.
As a sophomore, Johnson was the leading basketball scorer for Maize with 13.2 points a game. He also averaged 4.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists. He also shot 49% from the field and 36% from 3-point range.
Johnson led Maize to a 9-2 record in football. He is known for his ability to air it out, along with beating defenders with his running ability. As a sophomore, Johnson threw for 2,109 yards. He also had 25 touchdowns while completing 57% of his passes and throwing just three interceptions.
Badgers do well in Kansas
Wisconsin going after quarterbacks from Kansas is nothing new.
Current Badger star quarterback Graham Mertz was the No. 1 player in Kansas in the Class of 2019. Mertz went to school at Blue Valley North in the Kansas City metro area. Johnson is from the Wichita area. Yet, Johnson is very familiar with Mertz and remembered watching Mertz play in back-to-back state championship games.
The Badgers have also made a living in the region over the years. Johnson also has another connection with the Badgers. Wisconsin sophomore tight end Clay Cundiff – a three-star recruit in the 2019 class out of Wichita Bishop Carroll – is a family friend.
