Quinn Ewers goes down with injury, Arch Manning enters game vs. UTSA
Texas is rolling early against UTSA but has run into a significant injury problem. Quarterback Quinn Ewers went down with an injury following a play not involving the pass game. Ewers originally signaled toward the sideline to take him out but eventually went on the ground.
Trainers were working on the quarterback as the ESPN broadcast went to commercial. Exactly what is bothering Ewers is not known at the moment. However, once back from the break, ESPN showed him walking under his own power.
Once Ewers went down on the field, backup quarterback Arch Manning immediately began to warm up. On his first play from scrimmage, Manning connected with DeAndre Moore for a touchdown, putting the Longhorns up 21-0 with just over 12 minutes remaining.
On the next possession, Manning got it done with his legs. He took a 67-yard rushing score to the house to extend Texas’ lead to 28-7 – showcasing his dual-threat ability. Loud cheers from Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium brought some life back into the game after being concerned about the Ewers injury.

Following Manning’s heroics, Ewers was taken to the locker room and later was seen in street clothes. The ESPN broadcast updated the injury as a hand and foot issue. Head coach Steve Sarkisian later revealed Ewers is dealing with an abdomen injury, ruling him out for the rest of the game.

“Ewers spent around 15 minutes in the medical tent here,” ESPN’s Quint Kessenich said. “It’s rare you see a player with that much time, an extended stay. Doctors came out, walked over to Coach Sark and had a long conversation. I cannot read lips, I’m not sure what they said. Ewers remained in the tent until just now, walking off under his own power with a towel over his head.
“Now, the fans here, you think Heisman favorite, hush. But not quite because Arch has played so well off the bench.”
Unfortunately, injuries are nothing new for Ewers during his time with the Longhorns. In his third year as the starter, the previous two have seen extended periods of time missed. Last season saw Ewers play in 12 of 14 games while 2022 was three missed games.
Depending on the severity of the abdomen injury, long-term effects are where Texas could be worried with Ewers. Next week is the final nonconference matchup against Louisiana-Monroe before beginning SEC play against Mississippi State on Sept. 28. A bye then falls on the schedule before they head to Dallas for the Red River Shootout against Oklahoma.
