Quinn Ewers injury update: Latest on Texas QB, timeline to return
Texas Longhorns starting quarterback Quinn Ewers is week-to-week with an oblique strain and an abdominal strain, per Anwar Richardson. This comes after he spoke with doctors on Sunday.
Ewers was initially injured in the second quarter of the win over UTSA on Saturday. In his place, the highly-touted prospect Arch Manning entered the game for Texas, playing well in relief of Ewers. He would, presumably, start if Ewers is unable to moving forward.
This is the third season in a row where Quinn Ewers has unfortunately suffered an injury while being the starter at Texas. He previously injured his throwing shoulder in 2022 and his non-throwing shoulder in 2023.
The Texas Longhorns are set to play ULM next weekend. It’s a game that the first-ranked team in the AP Poll is going to be expected to win, even if the backup quarterback is forced into action. After that, however, things are going to get a little bit trickier with SEC play starting against Mississippi State in two weeks before Red River on October 12th.

After the game, head coach Steve Sarkisian shared what he knew about the injury to his starting quarterback.
“We don’t think it’s anything structural or broken or things like that. It was an odd play,” Sarkisian said. “But again, that gave an opportunity for Arch to get some valuable playing time and experience.”

Arch Manning did play well in relief of Quinn Ewers. There was a highlight worthy 67-yard run for a touchdown. That paired nicely with his 75 percent completion percentage for 223 passing yards and four passing touchdowns. That helped Texas earn an easy 56-7 win over the UTSA Roadrunners.
“For Arch to come in, you never know as a backup when you’re gonna get put in the game,” Sarkisian said. “For him to come in on his first play and hit DeAndre Moore for a touchdown or on his third play to be able to run a little bit of a different style of offense when he’s in there. The zone read to pull it in for the explosive play. Did some nice things for us and extended some drives on third down. So that was great experience for him that he got.”
Of course, given Manning’s pedigree, it’s not overly surprising he played well. Manning was the top-ranked recruit in the Class of 2023, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. With that, the hope is that he will be the quarterback of the future in Austin.
Still, for the time being, Quinn Ewers has plenty of experience and looks like an NFL prospect in his own right. Getting him back and healthy is going to be important for the Longhorns as the season marches on.
