The Texas quarterback situation has been all the rage in college football this week, as Quinn Ewers’ injury opened the door for star recruit Arch Manning to take over the Longhorns — at least for this weekend’s clash against Louisiana Monroe.

Moving forward, some believe Manning might become the Tom Brady to Ewers’ Drew Bledsoe, but Pete Thamel of ESPN is dousing water on that fire. The college football insider provided an update on Ewers on Saturday, providing a new timeline for the Longhorns quarterback’s return to the field, including his potential status for Texas’ clash with Oklahoma on Oct. 12.

“I was told just yesterday that Quinn Ewers’ injured oblique has improved significantly this week,” Thamel reported, via College GameDay. “We’ll get a sense early next week of whether he returns to practice, and a week from today, when we’re in Tuscaloosa, I have a feeling we’ll be playing the will-he-won’t-he game for the Mississippi State game.

“What these fans want to know is, will he be back for Red River? The overwhelming expectation is that he will be back in that game, barring any setbacks. One thing Steve Sarkisian has made crystal clear this week is that Quinn Ewers is Texas’ quarterback. There is no controversy. I think he heard the Arch hype-train coming, and he made it a point to say, ‘We have a national championship team, and Quinn is our quarterback.’”

While Texas doesn’t want their to be any controversy between Arch Manning and Quinn Ewers, if Arch Manning plays the way he did last weekend against UTSA, it might be tough for the Longhorns to go back to Quinn Ewers, even if they have all the best intentions moving forward.

Nick Saban weighs in on Texas’ Arch Manning-Quinn Ewers debate

Moreover, former Alabama head coach and current ESPN analyst Nick Saban weighed in on the Texas quarterback situation during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Friday afternoon. Evidently, Saban feels strongly that Ewers should regain his starting quarterback spot when he returns from his injury.

“I think what [Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian] did in the press conference yesterday sort of sent the message loud and clear that we have a championship caliber team and have an opportunity to maybe do something special with this team and Quinn Ewers is the quarterback,” Saban said. “And I think that’s probably the way it should be.”

Through three games this season, Quinn Ewers is completing 73 percent of his passes for 691 yards. He has 8 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

As for Arch Manning, in limited playing time he is completing nearly 78 percent of his passes for 318 yards, with 5 touchdowns and no picks.

Nick Saban acknowledged that Manning is very talented, but instead of creating a quarterback controversy, he believes Texas should use having two really good quarterbacks as a positive and keep Manning ready once Ewers returns.

The future is bright for Manning and Texas, according to Saban, but right now Ewers should be the guy when healthy.
