Texas QB room after Quinn Ewers injury | Why Longhorns, Steve Sarkisian are FINE with Arch Manning

In Texas‘ 56-7 win over UTSA on Saturday, Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers left the game in the second quarter with an abdominal injury and did not return. On Sunday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel provided an update on Ewers’ condition.

“Sources: Quinn Ewers ab injury isn’t as serious as initially feared,” Thamel wrote. “He’s likely to miss the Louisiana Monroe game this week, but is ‘week to week’ after leaving the UTSA game with what Steve Sarkisian termed an abdominal strain.”

Before leaving the game on Saturday, Ewers completed 14-of-his-16 pass attempts for 185 yards and two touchdowns while throwing one interception. After Ewers went down, Arch Manning led the Longhorns’ offense, completing 9-of-12 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns.

This is the third season in a row where Quinn Ewers has suffered an injury while being the starter at Texas. He previously injured his throwing shoulder in 2022 and his non-throwing shoulder in 2023.

Although Texas will be the heavy favorite against Louisiana Monroe in Week 4, the Longhorns’ schedule will quickly become more difficult once conference play begins in Week 5.

With matchups against Mississippi State, Oklahoma and Georgia just over the horizon, it will be pivotal for Ewers to recover as soon as possible. After Texas’ win over UTSA, Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian provided an update on Ewers’ condition.

“It’s an oblique strain, an abdomen strain,” Sarkisian said. “It remains to be seen kind of the seriousness of that and the length of that. We don’t think it’s anything structural or broken or things like that. It was an odd play. But again, that gave an opportunity for Arch to get some valuable playing time and experience.”

Will Louisiana Monroe give Texas a challenge?

UL Monroe is 2-0 this season. Most recently, the Warhawks dominated UAB in 32-6 fashion. In the win, UL Monroe held UAB to 259 total yards of offense and squeezed three turnovers out of the Blazers. UL Monroe will provide an excellent challenge for Manning with Ewers sidelined.

Expectations have never been higher for Manning. On Sunday, Paul Finebaum claimed Manning will win the Heisman Trophy before his collegiate career is over.

“Book it,” Finebaum said on SportsCenter. “Arch Manning is going to win the Heisman. I am in on that. And by the way, his granddad [Archie Manning] and Peyton [Manning] probably should have won it, and Arch will. Can you imagine? He’s replacing a Heisman favor right now. I don’t know if he’ll win it this year, but Arch Manning will definitely win the Heisman at Texas.”
