Quinn Ewers had a cup of coffee at Ohio State but he got the most out of it before he transferred out and went to Texas.

Of course, the rest is history. Ewers has been very successful with the Longhorns while the Buckeyes kept at it in their QB room.

Being a quarterback room, even if it was just for a semester, with CJ Stroud, Kyle McCord and led by head coach Ryan Day was worth it.

“I learned a lot while I was there under Coach Day and then CJ, and just that whole room was awesome to be around, and super thankful for that time that I got to spend there,” Ewers said. “And, like I said, I learned a whole lot. So I don’t regret any decision I made on going or anything like that. But the main reason I went was, I felt like I had  a great relationship with the coaching staff, and, you know, they were winning a lot of games, and I wanted to go be a part of something like that.

“And the reason I came back to Texas was one, you know, to be closer to where I’m from, and just closer to the resources that I have, the relationships that I’ve built over time just being from Texas.”

Day was very complimentary of Ewers leading into the Cotton Bowl Friday. Texas and Ohio State square off in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

While Ewers’ time in Ohio State was short, Day remembered it fondly.

“Well, he was one of the first eighth-graders that I ever offered,” Day said ahead of the Cotton Bowl. “He was in our camp here in the Woody [Hayes Athletic Center]. And I saw a young — he was a boy at the time, really, who just had a tremendous release.

“And I remember grabbing him and grabbing his dad and said: Man, you got a bright future ahead of you. I don’t know if this is good or bad, but we’re going to offer you a scholarship to Ohio State, even in eighth grade. Again, I don’t know if that’s legal or not, but we did. And then we went through the process. And boy, it was strange how it all shook out. He decided to come, really, in the middle of preseason camp for us. And so it was a little bit strange. But again, with college football, you look to adapt the best you can.”

Ewers and Texas are the underdogs to Ohio State Friday with the Buckeyes opening as a 4.5 point favorite.
