It was the last game of the last day of the live period; On3 walked over to court two of the Adidas 3SSB Circuit Session 1 to watch the Arkansas Hawks play Jalen Green Elite. We were a couple of minutes late to the game, and Jalen Green had already built a lead. Only a handful of coaches were sitting courtside, and most other scouts had left or were on different courts. In the first play, we see a solid 6-foot-8 player bury his man under the basket, call for the ball, and finish with his left hand through contact. It was then Rashaud Marshall caught our eye.

“I am a big-time post player. I love playing, banging around in the post,” Marshall told On3. “This year was big for me; I learned how to work hard, no days off. I am working on my perimeter skills now. I’m handling the ball more, shooting it a little.”

We loved the physicality of the Blytheville (AK) High forward. His ability to initiate contact and play through it with touch was impressive. He was not a player we had ranked, nor was he anyone we had heard much buzz on. After the game, On3 had to walk over and find out his story.

Marshall’s background

It has been a tough go for Marshall over the last few years. His father came down with an illness that put him in a wheelchair. Marshall was his father’s primary caregiver. With limited movement and the inability to move around, this became a full-time job for the freshman and sophomore in high school.

Rashaud Marshall cared for his father for the better part of a couple of years. If he had to miss a practice or be late to school for his dad, that was a sacrifice he was honored to make. After a multi-year battle, Marshall’s father passed away less than a year ago.

It was tough on Marshall, but he kept playing basketball like his father wanted. He transferred schools to Blytheville High, where the coach and staff would provide more support. And Marshall began to flourish.

Marshall talks recruitment

“I have offers from Ole Miss, Tulsa, and Florida State,” Marshall said. “I took my first official visit to Ole Miss a little bit ago (editor’s note – Marshall picked up an offer from Kansas two days after the event ended).”

Ole Miss: “I liked everything about the visit. They made it feel like home, and it is not too far away from home. I think I fit in well with how they play. I liked their guard play, the way their guards move the ball and create openings and space for the forwards.”

Florida State: “They do a great job with bigs and forwards like me. They’ve been talking a lot with me. They keep it real and let me know what I got to get better with around the perimeter. They put guys in the league.”

Marshall’s take

“I grew up a fan of Arkansas, they haven’t offered yet, but they have started talking to me. That would be a pretty big deal if I got that offer. My brother, Roy Marshall, played at Crowley’s Ridge College a few years back.

“I don’t have a timeframe for anything yet. I want to go on more visits. After this weekend, I will probably talk to my coaches and start thinking about that.”

On3’s take

Rashaud Marshall is strong a, burly post player on the block. He is physical on the block, buries his man deep, and gives a big target. Marshall has good hands and can finish, through contact, with both hands around the basket. He did not take a jump shot, but the free-throw form looked like you could build on it. There were a couple plays where he ripped through and attacked from the top of the key. Hard worker, blue-collar, and one to watch enter the rankings at the next update.
