Ray Liotta, who starred as “Shoeless” Joe Jackson in “Field of Dreams,” died Thursday at 67, according to Deadline.

Liotta was in the Dominican Republic filming “Dangerous Waters,” Deadline reported. No cause of death has been released, but Deadline added Liotta passed away in his sleep.

In addition to his role in “Field of Dreams,” Liotta might be best known for his role as Henry Hill in the 1990 film “Goodfellas.” That movie came out shortly after “Field of Dreams” and helped put Liotta on the map as the Martin Scorcese film, which also starred Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro, became one of the greatest films of all time.

More recently, he appeared in “The Many Saints of Newark” — a prequel to “The Sopranos” that came out last summer. He also starred in the Apple TV+ show “Black Bird” alongside “Kingsman: The Secret Service” star Taron Egerton.

Last year, Major League Baseball played a regular season game at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees. Kevin Costner — who played Ray Kinsella in the 1989 film — was at the game, but Liotta wasn’t. In fact, he appeared on The Rich Eisen Show in June 2021 and gave a surprising piece of information.

He’d never seen the movie.

“I read [Field of Dreams] and it was only my third movie,” Liotta said. “And I said, this is so silly. This guy hears voices and he’s got a cornfield. He makes a baseball field and removes the corn? When I read the script, I thought it was the silliest, silliest thing. And obviously I was wrong.”

The White Sox won that game over the Yankees 9-8 when Chicago star Tim Anderson hit a walk-off home run into the cornfield in the bottom of the ninth inning. This year’s Field of Dreams Game is set to feature the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds in August.
