PICKING Florida at Miss State | Gators, Billy Napier face the Bulldogs, Jeff Lebby in Starkville

ESPN’s Rece Davis advocated for Ed Orgeron to become Florida’s interim head coach if the Gators fire Billy Napier mid-season.

First, it was Paul Finebaum, jokingly anyway, calling for Urban Meyer and Nick Saban as co-coaches. Now Davis said Orgeron can take over.

But man, that just goes to show where things are in Florida right now. Billy Napier’s struggles are evident.

“If you go down the interim road, I’ve got, and I’m not advocating for that, I don’t see what good it does to players, to let Billy finish the season and then do what you need to do,” Davis said on the College GameDay Podcast. “But if you go down the interim road, there’s only one choice. He’s sitting right there, to my knowledge, a resident now, perhaps, of the great state of Florida. He’s sitting there, about four hours and 40 minutes down I-10 away, and he will come in, and he will give your program a jolt of energy.

“He will come from his palatial surroundings in the greater Destin area and get on I-10 and drive in there, smash about 12 Red Bulls, hit the can on his forehead. And the (Ed Orgeron) era will have started in Gainesville. How about them Gators? How good would that be? How good would that be? I’m not advocating for interim coaches. I think, generally speaking, you’re not really doing anybody much of a service by it. You play out the season and you move on. NFL is a little different, I think, but that’s the only choice. He’s got a place right there, you can just get in the car and he can be there by evening team meal.”

Orgeron’s most recent tenure came at LSU, beginning in 2016. He went 51-29 and won the national title in 2019, going 15-0.

Orgeron and the 2019 Tigers are arguably one of the greatest college football teams ever assembled, led by Heisman winning QB Joe Burrow, who went on to be the No. 1 overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Orgeron hasn’t coached since 2021, when he and LSU mutually agreed to part ways following a 6-6 season.
