Rece Davis reveals how likely it is for ACC, Big 12 to be one-bid leagues in College Football Playoff
If the College Football Playoff were to begin today, the ACC and Big 12 would only have one representative. Miami is currently the ACC’s highest-ranked team, while BYU occupies the three-seed at the moment. Both the Big Ten and SEC have four teams, while Boise State and Notre Dame round out the 12.
One of the ACC and Big 12 were hoping to sneak somebody else in there but ESPN’s Rece Davis does not believe that will happen. Miami losing its status as an undefeated is the main reason why, dropping their game against Georgia Tech on Saturday.
“That result probably made both conferences a one-bid league,” Davis said. “Miami is still in it. Clemson is suddenly still in it, depending on how the tiebreakers fall out. And then SMU, which has lost to BYU, not a conference game, is in it.
“The ACC and Big 12, more likely than not, will wind up being one-bid conferences in the Playoff.”
As Davis mentioned, SMU is the other ACC team that will make a run at the CFP. The Mustangs are currently ranked 14th but are undefeated in conference play. Making the ACC Championship and the Playoff is as simple as winning out in the regular season and beating whoever they face in Charlotte.

Where Miami’s loss factors in is potentially dipping out of the 12-team field after the ACC Championship game. There is still a chance the Hurricanes do not even make it there, another point Davis brought up.
Looking at the Big 12, both BYU and Colorado control their own destiny. The latter of the two currently has two losses and will likely need an automatic qualifier. BYU is currently undefeated but barely slipped by Utah in the Holy War. Although, they did rise in this week’s rankings, going to 6.
No matter who winds up representing the ACC or Big 12, Davis does not see a world where another conference member joins them in the CFP.
