Report: Former Penn State QB Matt McGloin reunites with Bill O'Brien as Boston College offensive analyst

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Matt McGloin is being hired by Boston College to be an offensive analyst. McGloin, a former Penn State quarterback, will reconnect with head coach Bill O’Brien after the two spent time together in Happy Valley.
“Source: Boston College is hiring former Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin as an offensive analyst,” Thamel said via X. “The move re-unites him with his former coach, Bill O’Brien. He’s a former starting quarterback at Penn State who won the Burlsworth Award in 2012 for the country’s top walk-on.”
This will be the first coaching job McGloin has possessed in his career. He was previously working in politics as a member of the Lackawanna County Board of Commissioners. McGloin took over the position in early 2024 but now presumably steps away from the position to get back into football.
Back in 2009, McGloin walked onto the Penn State team and eventually became the team’s starting quarterback. The 2012 Burlsworth Award was given to McGloin, as Thamel mentioned, after having success with O’Brien as his head coach.
McGloin threw for 3,271 yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions while leading the Nittany Lions to an 8-4 record. There was no bowl game played due to sanctions imposed on the program. Even so, the season was viewed as a massive success as Penn State stayed afloat through plenty of off-field controversy.

More on Boston College under Bill O’Brien
O’Brien was set to work in the NFL for the 2024 season but decided to stay in college. When Boston College came calling to be the next head coach, it was an opportunity he could not turn down. Some exciting moments occurred throughout the year too, providing some optimism.
While Florida State wound up being one of the worst teams in the ACC, Boston College did knock them off in the season open. At the time, the Seminoles were ranked inside the top 10. A close contest against No. 6 Missouri took place two weeks later in Columbia although ultimately resulted in a loss.
A rough middle portion of the season led to late-year success, winning three of their final four regular season games. The overall record finished at 7-5, one better than a year ago under Jeff Hafley.
Boston College was then given a trip to the Pinstripe Bowl against Nebraska and endured a five-point loss in New York City. Still, a year O’Brien feels like he can build on and push to eventually contend in the ACC.
