The rivalry game between Georgia and Georgia Tech is going to be played in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the 2025 season. The news was first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Known as Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate, that game in 2025 will become the first time in the modern era that the game is played at a field other than Sanford Stadium or Bobby Dodd Stadium. Prior to this, it had been played annually from 1925 onward, save for a one-season hiatus in 2020. Prior to 1925, Georgia and Georgia Tech also met 19 times, though those weren’t annual matchups.

A release from Georgia Tech athletic director J Batt explained the reasoning behind the decision to move the rivalry game to Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He also noted that Georgia Tech has partnered with AMB Sports and Entertainment.

“We know that some of you may be apprehensive that Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate will be played off-campus for the first time since Bobby Dodd Stadium opened in 1913. Please know that we understand that concern and know that this was not a decision that was made lightly,” Batt wrote. “As I noted earlier, embarking on the new era of college athletics requires exploring new revenue sources, as that is paramount to our goal of competing for championships at the highest level. In partnering with AMB Sports and Entertainment (AMBSE) to move Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate to Mercedes-Benz Stadium for 2025, we agreed to changes in the contract that calls for us to play one game annually at Mercedes-Benz Stadium through 2026.”

Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks added to that, explaining why the decision to move Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate to Mercedes-Benz makes sense for the Bulldogs.

“We always enjoy playing in a first-class venue like Mercedes-Benz Stadium,” Brooks said, per DawgsHQ. This move will only enhance the long-standing tradition of the Georgia-Georgia Tech game and will provide another outstanding event for our fans.”

Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate being moved to Mercedes-Benz Stadium is limited to 2025. That will be while the construction on the Fanning Center continues in and around Bobby Dodd Stadium. In 2027, the game will return to Bobby Dodd Stadium. With the move, the Georgia Bulldogs will not lose a home game in the rivalry series.

This season, the Georgia Bulldogs are set to host Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate in Athens at Sanford Stadium. They’ve won six games in a row in the series.
