North Carolina‘s first season under Bill Belichick has not gone as planned through five games. At 2-3 overall, all three losses have been to Power Four opponents and have been outscored 120-33 in those matchups.

However, there appear to be issues within the program that go deeper than the product we see on the field each Saturday. According to Pat Welter of WRAL News, there are underlying issues dividing the locker room.

“It’s an unstructured mess,” a source from within the Tar Heels program told WRAL. “There’s no culture, no organization. It’s a complete disaster.”

WRAL spoke to a parent of one Tar Heel football player, though they requested anonymity in fear of retaliation by the program. Their statement highlights similar issues, pointing blame at the decision-makers in Chapel Hill.

“It’s all starting at the top, and the boys are being affected,” an anonymous parent of a current UNC player told WRAL. “I don’t fault the players; I fault the leadership that created this toxic environment. There’s an individualistic mindset. The boys are young, and they are feeding into it.”

With these issues reportedly impacting team culture, it’s not surprise to hear the news behind the scenes has reached parents around the program. After all, North Carolina brought in 70 new players this offseason to a program led by a coach with no experience at the college level.

Bill Belichick is considered one of greatest NFL coaches of all time, and has a Super Bowl ring for nearly every finger across his illustrious career. The transition to the college game has been more of an adjustment.

There’s still time for North Carolina to turn its season around despite the slow start — not to mention Welter’s concerning report. Fan interest isn’t there, either as UNC faithful headed toward the exits of Kenan Stadium at halftime of their blowout loss to Clemson.

Looking ahead, there are seven games left for North Carolina on its regular season schedule. It features matchups against the likes of No. 19 Virginia, as well as unranked matchups vs. Syracuse and in-state rival Duke, and more. While they’ll have their work cut out for them while chasing a bowl game, that effort begins after their bye during Week 7.

When they return to the field, it’ll be on the other side of the country to take on ACC foe California. Kickoff is slated for 10:30 p.m. ET and will air live on ESPN.
