RJ Luis had decisions to make as one of the best-available players in the NCAA Transfer Portal and as a prospect for the 2025 NBA Draft. He’s now made his choice between the two for the next season of his career.

Luis will remain in the 2025 NBA Draft. The report came on Wednesday afternoon, per Jeff Goodman of Field of 68.

“There will be no change of heart. RJ’s excited about the future. He’s appreciative of St. John’s, Coach Pitino and the fans. He wants to leave college as Johnnie,” Luis’ father, Reggie, told Goodman. “We understand the situation, we were offered a lot of money to go back to college. But we have a plan and we’re going to stick with the plan.”

Luis has played three collegiate seasons with St. John’s and Massachusetts. He has appeared in 85 games, 52 being starts, for the Red Storm and Minutemen with averages of 14.1 points (43.9% FG, 31.4% 3PT), 5.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. That includes the career-best season he had last year for St. John’s in posting 18.2 points (43.9% FG, 33.6% 3PT on 1.3 makes), 7.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.4 steals, which led the Red Storm to an all-time record and earned him honors as a Consensus All-American and as Big East Player of the Year.

Luis, a Miami native, started his high school career at Christopher Columbus High School before transferring to Mt. Zion Prep in Maryland. He was part of the 2022 recruiting cycle.

Luis was set to be the second-best transfer, behind only Memphis’ PJ Haggerty, who committed to Kansas State, per the latest update to On3’s Industry Ranking of 2025’s Top Transfer Portal Players. He was ranked No. 5 overall and as the No. 1 combo guard.
