Report: Steph Curry accepts role as assistant general manager with Davidson basketball programs

Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry has accepted a role with his alma mater Davidson as assistant general manager for the basketball programs, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. Curry is the first active player in U.S. major professional sports to accept an administrative job with an NCAA team.
“In his new role, Curry, who played three seasons at Davidson (2006-09), will provide guidance and advice to the male and female athletes through his experiences in college and professionally,” Charania wrote. “He’ll work with general manager Austin Buntz, a former Under Armour global sports marketing team member.”
Charania also reported that Curry, his wife Ayesha Curry and longtime Davidson College supporters Don, Matt and Erica Berman plan on starting an eight-figure fund for both the men and women’s programs. It’s a massive development for the mid-major school.
Curry played three seasons at Davidson, where he remains the men’s basketball program’s all-time leading scorer. Curry also was a two-time All-American, two-time SoCon Player of the Year, three-time First-Team All-SoCon selection and the 2009 NCAA scoring champion.
He averaged 28.6 points, 5.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game that season. Alas, Curry isn’t remembered for his regular-season scoring at Davidson but instead, his phenomenal performances during Davidson’s run to the Elite Eight his sophomore year.
In Davidson’s four-game run through the NCAA Tournament, Curry averaged 32 points per game. The run was highlighted by a jaw-dropping 40-point performance in the opening round against Gonzaga when Curry knocked down 8-of-his-10 attempts from 3-point range.

Steph Curry ultimately opted out of returning for his senior season and moved onto the NBA, but he still planned to earn his degree. Curry finally fulfilled his plans in 2022 when he received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the college.
While receiving his diploma, Curry was also inducted into Davidson’s athletic hall of fame. He is the only Davidson player to have his number retired. Now, he’s ready to contribute to the program once again.
He’ll have some serious work to do. Davidson finished the regular season with a 16-15 record and a 6-12 mark in conference play. Matt McKillop is in his third season as the program’s head coach. He is yet to finish a season with an above .500 record.
McKillop joined Davidson’s coaching staff as an assistant coach in 2008 and coached Curry in his final two years with the program. The pair will reconnect as Curry looks to return Davidson to its former heights.
