Report: FAU expected to retain OL coach Ed Warinner under Tom Herman
Tom Herman, former Houston and Texas coach, just took over the FAU job after a few years off following his firing from Texas. As always, when a new coach takes over the program, rebuilding the staff is priority No. 1. At least for Herman, he’ll have one familiar face around the program in year one. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Herman will retain offensive line Ed Warinner through the coaching transition and keep him as the coach of that position.
Here was the news via Thamel:
“Sources: FAU expected to retain Ed Warinner as the school’s offensive line coach. Warinner worked with new FAU coach Tom Herman at Ohio State when Herman was the OC there. Warinner has also been an assistant at Notre Dame, Michigan and Minnesota.”

Not bad for Herman to lock down a solid and veteran offensive line coach that has experience at a number of top jobs. Warinner could have been an amusing candidate for other, bigger O-line coaching jobs, but looks like he’ll stay put in Boca Raton.
Here are some of his accomplishments FAU, according to their team website, in just the few years he’s been there. Herman certainly made a good call in keeping this one around.
- Joined the Owls in February of 2021 with more than 33 years of college coaching experience, including nearly 25 seasons working on the offensive side of the ball
- The Owls’ line returned the starting five, but saw the insertion of Chaz Neal at RT and Kamaar Bell at RG as well as the emergence of Alex Atcavage
- The line provided protection for a run game that included 14 players throughout 2021, with sophomore back Johnny Ford receiving the bulk of the carries with 131 attempts. The Owls averaged 4.2 yards per carry and saw three backs, who had more than 20 carries average better than 4.4 yards per carry
- Ford led the backs averaging 6.3 yards per carry
