Rhett Lashlee provides injury update ahead of Week 2 vs. BYU
SMU is set to play its first power conference foe as a member of the ACC, hosting BYU on Friday night in Dallas. A fun crowd is expected from Gerald R. Ford Stadium, with the Mustangs back competing at the highest level of football. Rhett Lashlee bringing success to the program in the previous few years certainly helps.
Just a few days away from kickoff, there was some injury news for Lashlee to discuss. Nearly all of it was positive coming out of the Houston Christian matchup. Lashlee named three players who were dealing with issues but expects all of them to play against BYU.
“I think Moochie (Dixon) should be available this week,” Lashlee said. “He was just having back spasms last week so we held him. I think Rooster (Knighton) should be available this week. LJ (Johnson), we’re kind of taking him day to day. I think he’ll be good to go… I think we’re in pretty good shape with everybody that played last week and the few we held should be available. I don’t think any changes.”
Johnson and Knighton are both running backs but only the former has made a real impact thus far. In two games, Johnson has rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, being SMU’s second-leading rusher. Knighton has just one carry to his name for four yards, taking place in the season-opening win against Nevada. You can add two receptions for 26 yards to his stat sheet too.

Based on Lashlee’s words, both should be available against BYU, giving SMU an even deeper backfield as they go up against a Big 12 opponent.
As for Dixon, the wide receiver has yet to make much of a contribution. He did get to play against Nevada but his only recorded stat was a tackle following an interception from quarterback Preston Stone. To this point of the season, there has not been a reception. Hopefully, that will change on Friday night, and the fifth-year player adds a new dynamic to the SMU offense.
The Mustangs have a chance to begin their season 3-0 before a bye week. BYU will be no easy task but getting a few offensive pieces healthy will help.
