RJ Luis: One of nation's top unsigned seniors talks recruitment
RJ Luis is ranked No. 128 in the recent On3 class of 2022 update. The 6-foot-6 shooting guard has proven to be one of the top unsigned seniors in the country. A late bloomer playing his final year with Lanham (MD) Mt Zion Prep, Luis has consistently finished with double-doubles while defending the opposing team’s best player.
“I put the ball in the basket,” Luis told On3. “It doesn’t matter how, whatever the defense gives me. I am a big wing and try to use my length to guard and disrupt the passing lanes. I’ve matured my game a lot this season, playing more aggressively. I watch a lot of the big guards like Jayson Tatum and Devin Booker. Tatum’s ability to create space at his size and Booker’s ability to get into his shot.”
College programs started to notice this summer with the SOH Elite program on the UA Rise circuit. On3 spoke exclusively with RJ Luis after a win at the National Prep School Invitational to get a feel on his recruitment.
“I have offers from St Bonaventure, Quinnipiac, Marist, Austin Peay, Old Dominion, Northeastern, and Lamar,” Luis said. “I have not been on any visits yet, but I am trying to set something up with St Bonnaventure for late March after my season ends.”

Luis’ take
“I’ve recently started hearing a lot from Georgia, UCF, Temple, and Marquette. I think they all may be close to offering, at least that is what it sounds like.
“I’m looking for player development. I want to play at the next level in the NBA. I’ll look for somewhere I feel comfortable, where I can come in and try to win. I would like to play early in college, but my decision will be about trust, not the level. I know I can help a team win at a high major, but it is a blessing to play D-I at any level.”
On3’s take
RJ Luis is a tough-nosed player who just exudes winning qualities. He comes from basketball lineage as his dad, Reggie Charles, was 6-foot-7 and had a 15-year pro career overseas. Luis is an excellent passer as an initiator in the pick and roll. He is a lockdown perimeter defender, both on and off the ball. While his jump shot can be streaky, he is also a noted scorer, with the pull-up and slashing to the basket.
