Robert Griffin III has been absent from TV since his firing from ESPN last fall. He’ll now reportedly be with a competitor, though, in a return to the booth for next season.

Per Andrew Marchand at The Athletic, FOX Sports will be hiring Griffin III to serve as the network’s No. 2 game analyst for their college football coverage.

“NEWS: After being fired by ESPN, Robert Griffin III is expected to be hired by Fox Sports as its No. 2 game analyst, The Athletic has learned,” Marchand tweeted on Thursday.

Griffin III had been at ESPN since 2021 before his firing in mid-August of 2024 with two years left on his deal at the company. There was no official reasoning for the end of his time there with several names at the network being part of layoffs last year too due to apparent cost cuts. That’s after RGIII had made regular appearances as an analyst on shows like ‘Get Up’, ‘First Take’, and ‘Monday Night Countdown’ as well as a color commentator for college football games.

Since then, Griffin III has maintained his presence online. He often posts on Twitter to share takes on football, both in college and the pros, from social media while also still having a podcast titled ‘Outta Pocket with RGIII’.

Now, with this, Griffin III would be taking the spot in the broadcast booth that used to be Brock Huard, who stepped away for family reasons earlier in April. That means Griffin III will be calling games next to Jason Benetti on the number-two team for the network behind their number-one duo in Gus Johnson and Joel Klatt with Big Noon.

Griffin III is most known for his playing career with four collegiate seasons at Baylor before a nearly decade-long career in the NFL. By the time his career ended in Waco, RGIII was a winner of The Heisman Trophy and an All-American as he completed 67.1% of his throws while posting 307.8 yards per game overall with 111 total touchdowns scored for the Bears. He’d then go on to be the No. 2 pick in 2012, after Andrew Luck, and win Rookie of the Year in Washington before injuries derailed his pro career with stops also in Cleveland and Baltimore.

Griffin III is an interesting voice across football with his post-career personality in the media. He’ll now come back from freelancing the past eight months in a return to a network with his reported hiring soon by FOX.
