During Saturday’s Fiesta Bowl between Michigan and TCU, ESPN2 had a broadcast featuring Robert Griffin III, Cole Cubelic, A.Q. Shipley and Taylor Lewan providing analysis. However, the crew had to go through the fourth quarter without Griffin, who went sprinting off the field in the third quarter.

Griffin’s wife went into labor in the middle of the broadcast. He took a phone call on camera in the middle of the broadcast — much to the dismay of his partners — before he told them who it was and what was happening.

Then, he sprung into action, sprinting toward the tunnel as he went to be with his wife.

After Griffin left, Michigan answered back after another TCU touchdown as Kalel Mullings ran in a one-yard touchdown and J.J. McCarthy converted the two-point attempt to make it a 41-30 TCU lead in the final seconds of the third quarter.

Then, after a Horned Frogs fumble, Michigan scored again to make it a 41-38 game with 14:13 to play in what’s shaping up to be a classic.

ESPN2’s ‘Field Pass’ for Michigan vs TCU has been full of great moments

Lewan made waves in the first quarter when he disagreed with a trick play Michigan ran on its first series of the game. He also pointed out the fact that Michigan’s offensive line won the Joe Moore Award as the nation’s best offensive line for the second year in a row, which is why he didn’t think a trick play was necessary.

“Listen, I truly believe Jim Harbaugh and his staff are the best staff in the NCAA. However, I have to disagree with that call,” Lewan said. “You have the two-time Joe Moore winning team, you need to take that … right behind the big boys. I love the trickery, just not at this point in the game. That one broke my heart.”

Lewan is on the broadcast as he deals with a knee injury that’s keeping him away from the Titans.
