Robert Griffin III, Mark Ingram reveal where they keep their Heisman Trophy
Travis Hunter won the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, a historic night for defensive players in the sport. He joins a large fraternity of former winners, though not one that has many defensive players.
But perhaps the real question on the minds of a couple former winners was what Hunter would do with his Heisman Trophy.
Robert Griffin III and Mark Ingram both weighed in this weekend with where their Heisman Trophy has been stored for the last several years. You might not expect the answers.
“I gave it to my parents for 10 years,” said Griffin, the former Baylor star, on The Triple Option podcast. “And now it’s on display in the man cave.”
Ingram’s story was similar, with his Heisman Trophy only recently coming into his possession.
“My mom had mine for 14 years,” the former Alabama running back said. “I just got it a year ago. My mom had it 14 years. I was still in college when I won it. Like you don’t take the Heisman back to the dorm. I am the Heisman. I don’t have to have the Heisman. If you want the Heisman, come get me. You want to touch the Heisman, come touch me.”

The panel on The Triple Option bust into laughter at that. Hunter may well have a similar story in future years.
But for his part, Griffin explained exactly why he gave the Heisman Trophy to his parents. He also revealed a neat story from just after his win.
“I’m sure you gave it to your parents for that reason, but I gave it to my parents because I felt like they were a big reason that I was able to win it,” Griffin said. “My teammates, I rushed back right after we won the Heisman to go to bowl practice. I missed one bowl practice, I was kind of pissed about it.
“We get back and put the Heisman Trophy right in the middle of practice so that every single guy on the team could see that we won this, not one individual.”
As far as Heisman Trophy stories go, that’s a pretty good one.
