Robert Griffin III states he would not have transferred to Texas in NIL era
Robert Griffin III had an incredible career at Baylor, which included winning the Heisman Trophy in 2011. Griffin grew up in Texas and would have strongly considered the Longhorns. However, they did not offer him as a quarterback coming out of high school.
In today’s day and age of college football, Robert Griffin III could have transferred to Texas or somewhere else and received a large sum of money through NIL. RG3 appeared on Pardon My Take recently and was asked if he would have transferred to Texas in the NIL era.
“I was a fast track and field guy. So they never gave me an opportunity to play quarterback, or even be recruited as a quarterback,” Robert Griffin III said of Texas. “But after my freshman year at Baylor, Mack [Brown] met me at the 50-yard line at UT’s stadium, and he said, ‘Man, we really messed up with you, didn’t we? You can come here any time you want.’
“So I look at that sometimes and I’m like, ‘Man, what if we were in the NIL transfer portal days back in 2008, would I have transferred to Texas?’ And the answer is no, I wouldn’t have. But it’s nice to think about. And had they offered me a scholarship to play quarterback, I probably would have went there, to be quite honest with you.”
Robert Griffin III ended up passing for more than 10,000 yards in his college career. During his senior season, he threw for 4,293 yards and 37 touchdowns and rushed for 699 yards and 10 scores.

RG3 was asked if he would have gone to Texas if offered $6 million as there’s no doubt he could have demanded a large chunk of money had he entered the transfer portal.
“I would go to Baylor and say, ‘Give me $4 [million]. Give me 4 if you can,” Robert Griffin III said. “I did not grow up with money. So the likelihood of a team coming to you when you’re an 18-year-old and paying you 6 million bucks, you’re going to entertain that. The way I look at it is, I love my university, and I went there for a reason, you know.
“Everything worked out for me the way it worked out because I went to Baylor University. So had I gone to Texas, would the Heisman Trophy we won at Baylor mean as much at Texas? I don’t know if it would have. God has a plan of making all that stuff work out and it definitely worked out in my favor.”
