Roman Harper reacts to Quinn Ewers winning SEC offensive player of the week over DJ Lagway, hammers Michigan
Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers won the SEC offensive player of the week honors for his part in helping lead the Longhorns past Michigan on the road over the weekend. However, not everybody agrees with that decision.
SEC Network analyst Roman Harper believes Florida quarterback DJ Lagway should have been given the conference’s top weekly prize. Instead, he wasn’t even named SEC freshman of the week during his electrifying first career start. That honor went to Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava.
“I mean, how does DJ Lagway not end up in any of these things?” Harper asked Cole Cubelic and Paul Finebaum on Monday. He listed off his impressive stat line — 18 of 25 for 436 passing yards — to back up his case.
Finebaum pushed back, saying how impressive it was that Texas won in the Big House. After all, the Wolverines had a 29-game home winning streak snapped by Ewers and the Longhorns.

Harper was quick to jump on this point. “Michigan’s not even good!” he responded.
Finebaum agreed, “We found that out.”
Ewers finished the 31-12 win against the reigning national campions throwing three touchdowns on 24 of 36 passes for 246 yards to solidift the Longhorns as legitimate College Football Playoff contenders in the early portion of the season.

However, the Gators are in a rebuilding process — and fans felt as though they’ve found their quarterback of the future in Lagway before his Week 2 start. They likely feel justified based on his performance.
While Harper may feel as though the SEC voters snubbed Lagway from player of the week honors, it’s clear that Lagway belongs on the field for the Gators. Head coach Billy Napier said he will continue to play Lagway in each game alongside Graham Mertz this season.
“Our intention the entire time has been to play DJ in every game,” Napier said. “Obviously, he gets a little bit more experienced each week. And certainly, for him to have the opportunity to be the starter, prepare with the ones and then go play, and the way he did that — the poise, the composure — I just think it shows that he’s ready to do what we intend to do with him going forward.”
