The Florida State Seminoles were without running back Roydell Williams for the team’s win over the California Golden Bears. Now, head coach Mike Norvell has shared an update on the timeline for the injured FSU running back.

Unfortunately for FSU, it appears the injury to Roydell Williams is going to be a long-term one and Mike Norvell expects him to be out for an extended period of time.

“He’ll be out probably for an extended period,” Mike Norvell said. “We have to continue to evaluate what that looks like. It’s unfortunate for him but it does open up an opportunity for some of those younger guys.”

Roydell Williams came to Florida State as a transfer from Alabama where he played the previous four seasons. He’s since become the featured back for the Seminoles. This season, in three games, he’s rushing for 2.7 yards per carry and two touchdowns.

Now, Mike Norvell needs to find a way to replace Roydell Williams. That starts with Lawrance Toafili, who rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown against Cal. After that, several younger backs will need to step up.

“I thought [Lawrance Toafili] did an outstanding job there in the game. Then you saw Kam Davis who got banged up a little bit in the game but was able to come back. Sam Singleton was able to get some work. Micahi Danzy is really pushing throughout. Then, obviously, Caziah Holmes. I think that running back core is still a very talented group and it’s unfortunate we’re going to be without Roydell for a little while,” Norvell said.

“Obviously, Jaylin Lucas being out for the year. I mean, those are two really good players but I’m very confident in that group and what they’ll be able to do but you will see a little bit more of those younger guys as we push forward…I do think that those guys should be in pretty good shape to be available this week. There was a good push there toward the end of last week but you’ll feel good about where that’s trending.”

To this point in the season, the running game and offense in general have been a struggle for Florida State. As a team, the Seminoles are rushing for 65.75 yards per game on the ground. That’s 131st in the country in rushing offense. At 15 points per game, Florida State is also sitting at 126th in scoring offense.

Now, Florida State is hoping to find more success on the ground when they take on SMU in Week 5.
