Report: Former Georgia running back Sony Michel visiting with Los Angeles Chargers
NFL rosters were cut down to 53 on Tuesday, with a couple of surprise moves occurring. One was the Miami Dolphins releasing former Georgia running back Sony Michel, who helped the Los Angeles Rams on their journey to a Super Bowl title. Now being a free agent, Michel is already a wanted man.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Michel is heading back to the city of Los Angeles for a visit. However, it will be on the other side of SoFi Stadium with the Chargers. Rapoport described Michel as somebody who can “bolster” a running back room.
Free agent RB Sony Michel is flying to Los Angeles for a meeting with the #Chargers today, sources say,” Rapoport said. “A surprise release by the #Dolphins, Michel could find work quickly for a team that has looked to bolster its RB room.

Michel was planning on being a contributor in Miami for head coach Mike McDaniel. He was even going to wear the No. 34 and honor legendary running back Ricky Williams. Instead, the Dolphins decided to put him on the open market.

Now, there is a possibility of a return to Los Angeles. For now, it’s just a visit for Michel but the Chargers are looking for some help at running back. Austin Ekeler is still the lead back but primary backup from a season ago, Justin Jackson, left for the Detroit Lions in free agency this offseason.
In the final six games of the 2021 regular season, Michel had at least 18 carries and played a significant role down the stretch for the Rams. He scored a touchdown in half of those games and averaged 90 yards per game.
Michel was not too much of a factor come playoff time but did earn his second Super Bowl ring. His first came as a rookie after the New England Patriots selected the Georgia product in the first round.
