Ryan Day, Chip Kelly discuss threat Penn State DE Abdul Carter poses
Ohio State is going to be down a couple players on the offensive line heading into Penn State, specifically at left tackle. Unfortunately, one of the best pass rushers in college football is set to line up there, Abdul Carter causes headaches no matter the opponent and will be hoping for a big game against the Buckeyes.
Ryan Day gave his thoughts about Carter, having high praise for the entire Penn State defensive line. However, he did admit Ohio State will need to make sure No. 11 is accounted for on every player, no matter the situation.
“He’s excellent,” Day said. “It’s not just him, I think they have a lot of good players on the defensive line and defense in general. Certainly have to know where 11 is on the field, he’s dynamic as a player. Whether it’s run game, it’s pass game — you got to do a really good job with him… It will be a challenge for our guys. So, we got to have a great week of preparation.”
Carter has spun down to become an edge rusher after previously playing linebacker. His production has only gone up, already having 10 tackles for a loss and four sacks on the year. Showing up on the big stage is nothing new either, having the best game of his season coming against Illinois with 4.0 TFLs and two sacks.

Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly also spoke on Carter, talking about the special athleticism he possesses — similar to another famous No. 11 to play for Penn State.
“He’s extremely explosive for his size,” Kelly said. “He’s played linebacker before, now they moved him to the front. He’s a lot like Micah (Parsons) in terms of what he can do in disrupting the game as a pass rusher. I understand why they moved him up there but I think it’s his athleticism, you don’t see that athleticism in the defensive linemen that you get from him.
“Even trying to replicate that in practice, do you have somebody that is that fast? If you do, he’s not at the same size as him. It’s his size, speed combination and ability to get off on the snap is what’s going to make him difficult to handle.”
