Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day recently shared that offensive coordinator Chip Kelly is going to call games from the press box this season.

As Day explained, by being up in the box, he has the ability to be more organized. Because of that, it will allow him to call the game better and should benefit the Buckeyes offense this season.

“His plan is to be up in the box,” Chip Kelly said. “I think, for him, being able to get organized up there. He’s got the tablet up there. He’s got his call sheet up there. He can really be clean after every series. I think that’s one of the things two that he and I were talking about was that when you’re on the sideline and you’re the head coach, you have your call sheet, but it’s hard to get your next series ready when you’re doing all these other things.”

This is a distinct change for Chip Kelly who has been a head coach, either at the NFL or college level, in every year except one since 2009. That means he was on the sideline, giving him a completely different perspective and more duties.

“When you’re up there, you’ve got a desk, you can sit down and you get your thoughts organized for the next series,” Day said. “You can go through everything. You can communicate well. So, that’s gonna be his plan.”

There is a lot of trust between Ryan Day and Chip Kelly. While Day was playing for New Hampshire, Kelly was an assistant offensive coach. Day would later go on to be an assistant coach under Kelly when he was in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers.

Chip Kelly praised Will Howard, says he earned starting job

Shortly after Will Howard was named the starting quarterback at Ohio State, Chip Kelly praised his growth and explained that he earned the starting job.

“I think Will’s earned it. We grade everything. Obviously, he graded out the highest at the position. There’s a lot of data-driven information with that. In terms of decisions that he makes on the field, running the offense, it’s just as critical to be that guy in the run game as it is in the pass game in terms of what we ask the quarterback to do here,” Kelly said.

“I think he’s really worked extremely hard in the offseason. From the end of spring ball on April 13 to now, he’s made great strides. We gave him a plan over the summer to work on, and he took it and ran with it. Where he is now is pretty impressive.”
