Ryan Williams reveals hilarious reaction to 4th-and-31 Iron Bowl play while visiting Auburn
Ryan Williams couldn’t believe what he was watching last year when Alabama converted a fourth-and-31 play to win the Iron Bowl. Now a receiver for the Crimson Tide, he was then a high school recruit who was committed to Alabama but taking a visit at Auburn.
Speaking on a recent episode of his podcast, New Wave, Williams revealed that he was “flirting” with the Tigers and didn’t really want to commit to them. However, they wanted him to flip his commitment on the field if they pulled off the win.
That seemed unlikely going in, but with just 32 seconds remaining, Auburn held a 24-20 lead as Alabama prepared for its last shot. Jalen Milroe heaved a prayer that was hauled in by Isaiah Bond in the back of the end zone.
Williams’ jaw dropped, and he was relieved that he wouldn’t have to commit or make up an excuse why he wouldn’t.
“I was just flirting with Auburn in that Iron Bowl game and before the game, they was like, ‘when we win, you’re gonna commit at center field and we rushing the field,'” he said. “I’m at Auburn. This is an Auburn visit. Man, it’s fourth-and-31, and when I say I was shaking in my boots — if they would have stopped them, we would have rushed the field right there. I’m entertaining like, ‘Yeah, yeah. I’m gonna rush the field. I’m gonna do it.’ I didn’t wanna do it, man. Next thing you know, he threw it.”

Alabama would go on to win the game 27-24 and then defeat Georgia in the SEC Championship. The Crimson Tide made it to the College Football Playoff, where they lost to eventual champion Michigan in the semifinals.
Ryan Williams signed Alabama in January as one of the first big-time recruits for new coach Kalen DeBoer. He ranked as the No. 5 overall player and No. 3 prospect in the 2024 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
So far he leads the Crimson Tide with 10 catches for 285 yards and four touchdowns through three games. It’s safe to say the 4th-and-31 play is one that keeps on giving to Crimson Tide fans.
