Ryan Wingo injury update: Latest provided on freshman wide receiver
In a loaded room for Texas this season, freshman WR Ryan Wingo entered Saturday as the team’s second-leading receiver. Unfortunately, a hit in the first half against Mississippi State saw Wingo hobble to the sideline, and has not been back in the game since then. Still plenty of talent for Arch Manning to work with but still not what the Longhorns would want.
Alyssa Lang was able to provide an update on Wingo early in the third quarter, saying there is a brace on the right knee. Wingo took a shot on his lower leg after catching a screen pass before quickly being tackled. Nothing official is coming from the Texas sideline but one the SEC Network crew is monitoring.
“We’re keeping an eye on him,” Lang said. “I’ve been watching him on the sidelines. He took that big hit in the first half. Haven’t seen him come back out. I noticed he does have a brace on his right knee. Texas doesn’t do formal injury reports but I will keep you posted on what I see down here.”
Play-by-play broadcaster Tom Hart added, “He does have his helmet on on the sidelines but doesn’t look like he’s going to return anytime soon.”

Wingo has been spectacular as a true freshman, having 239 yards and two touchdowns on just nine receptions coming into Texas’ SEC opener. His lone catch against Mississippi State thus far was the play he got injured on, losing two yards.
Luckily for Texas, there is some time before their next game. A bye week separates Saturday and Oct. 12 against Oklahoma for the Red River Shootout. Getting somebody as explosive as Wingo back in the rotation would be huge for the Longhorns.
Wingo played high school football at St. Louis (MO) St. Louis University, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 38 overall recruit in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
