Saint Mary's forward Ashton Hardaway enters NCAA transfer portal

Saint Mary’s forward Ashton Hardaway has entered the NCAA transfer portal, per On3’s Pete Nakos. He is the son of Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway, who he began his career playing under.
Hardaway spent one season at Saint Mary’s, where he helped lead the Gaels to a West Coast Conference championship and a 29-6 overall record. This also included a trip to the NCAA Tournament as a No. 7-seed , where they would end their season in the Round of 32 against No. 2-seed Alabama after staving off No. 10-seed Vanderbilt in the opening round.
He appeared in 33 of those games for Saint Mary’s. There, he would average 2.1 points per game, 1.2 rebounds and 0.4 assists.
During his true freshman season at Memphis, Hardaway appeared in 30 games last year, starting in three of those matchups. His numbers in 2024 are nearly identical to the ones he produced during his single season playing under his father at Memphis.
At Memphis, Hardaway’s best game of the season came against Michigan on Nov. 22 when he erupted for a season-high 17 points while shooting 5-7 from 3-point range. It was the only game during his true freshman season when Hardaway scored double figures. He did not score in double figures at Saint Mary’s but did score a season-high nine points during a win against Santa Clara on Feb. 11.

Before college, Hardaway played for Sierra Canyon, a highly-touted school in California known for sending top-ranked prospects to college basketball. He most notably was a teammate of Los Angeles Lakers guard Bronny James. Hardaway held offers from the likes of Kansas, SMU and Oklahoma State, among others coming out of the high school ranks.
Before he originally arrived on campus at Memphis, he was rated as a three-star prospect. Hardaway was the No. 127 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services.
As of Wednesday, March 26, over 1,250 Men’s College Basketball players have entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. That number is expected to grow as the 2024-25 college basketball season nears its end.
