Sam Houston has hired former Virginia Tech offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen as its new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

The Bearkats have been an FCS powerhouse the last few years but are moving up to the FBS level this season.

He is the third offensive coordinator in three seasons for Sam Houston under K. C. Keeler.

“We are very excited to announce Brad Cornelsen as our offensive coordinator,” Keeler said in a statement. “He is a proven and seasoned play caller at the FBS and Power 5 level. Brad has a clear vision of what we want to do on offense and his creativity and experience will help elevate our offensive unit heading into Conference USA.”

Ryan Carty, the offensive coordinator from 2018-2021, left to take the head coaching role at his alma mater Delaware. Last year’s offensive coordinator, John Perry, is now the offensive coordinator at Lamar.

Cornelsen was the offensive coordinator for the Hokies from 2016-2021.

Before heading to Blacksburg, Va., Cornelsen was the co-offensive coordinator at Memphis. He was nominated for the Broyles Award in 2015.

He also coached at Missouri Southern State, Northeastern State, Northwest Missouri State, Illinois State and Oklahoma State.

Sam Houston has been one of the best FCS college programs in the country over the last few years, and it culminated in an FCS title during the 2020-21 academic year.

This past season was a down year for the Bearkats as they finished only 5-4 for the season. That came after a 11-1 record during the 2021 season.

Sam Houston will hope Brad Cornelsen will be able to help Sam Houston establish itself in Conference USA.
