Back in the spring, Huntersville (N.C.) William Amos Hough four-star cornerback Samari Matthews locked in a commitment date of Aug. 10.

He’s since traversed further into the heart of his recruitment, logging official visits and seeing top contenders emerge more than others. Now, he’s moving his decision timeline up a month.

Matthews announced on Monday that he will now reveal his commitment on July 11 and will choose between Texas, South Carolina, Florida State and Miami. There’s been some movement in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, too.

On3 insiders Chad Simmons and Steve Wiltfong have each logged picks in favor of the Longhorns landing Matthews. Those predictions follow Texas insiders Justin Wells and Charlie Williams, both of whom picked Texas to win out for the blue-chipper in April.

Heading into the back half of June, Texas and South Carolina were pegged as the frontrunners for Matthews. He’s now logged official visits to both programs, with his trip to Columbia coming over the weekend.

After spending another weekend in Austin, Matthews gave another glowing review of the Longhorns when speaking with Inside Texas. The visit “exceeded expectations” and The Forty Acres “felt like home,” reaffirming the feelings he’s had for the SEC program for some time.

Official visits are now in the books, as he saw Florida State and Miami earlier in the month. A commitment is now less than three weeks away and Texas looks to be in the driver’s seat hitting the home stretch.

Matthews is the No. 69 overall prospect and No. 9 cornerback in the 2026 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 6 player in North Carolina.

To date, Texas has the No. 10 class in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. Steve Sarkisian and his staff are looking to push for the No. 1 spot, however, and the Longhorns are trending for plenty of the top names still on the board this summer.

Five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo, top-50 interior offensive lineman John Turntine, top-50 EDGE Jamarion Carlton, elite four-star athlete Jalen Lott and four-star safety Chace Calicut are among the prospects also trending to Texas in the On3 RPM, as of June 23.

Texas added a second five-star to its 2026 class on Sunday, as Los Angeles Sierra Canyon EDGE Richard Wesley joined the fold not long after decommitting from Oregon. The No. 24 overall prospect sits atop the class with five-star quarterback Dia Bell, On3’s No. 4 recruit and No. 2 QB.

June has witnessed seven commitments for the Longhorns thus far. Four-star defensive lineman Vodney Cleveland, four-star DL Dylan Berymon, four-star DL Corey Wells and three-star wide receiver Kohen Brown are among the other new additions to the class this month.
