Report: Four-star quarterback gives cryptic response on reported transfer destination

Virginia Tech lost quarterback Braxton Burmeister to the transfer portal before the New Ear Pinstripe Bowl against Maryland. It’s his second time going through the process, originally playing for the Oregon Ducks.

On Monday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Burmeister had made his decision and would play for the San Diego State Aztecs. Attending La Jolla Country Day during high school, the quarterback would be finishing up his collegiate career back home.

However, when the Union-Tribune reached out to Burmeister to confirm their own story, he denied committing to the Aztecs. He said “there is mutual interest” but nothing was official between the two sides.

If San Diego State does end up landing the quarterback, Burmeister would enter the program as a redshirt senior. He threw for 1,960 yards, 14 touchdowns, and four interceptions last season with Virginia Tech.

According to the report, classes will begin for San Diego State on Wednesday but the first two weeks will be virtual. If Burmeister is going to play for the Aztecs next season, he would have to make a decision quickly.

Coming out of high school, Burmeister was a four-star prospect according to the On3 Consensus. He set San Diego Section records at Jolla Country Day with 11,499 passing yards, 936 completions, and 128 touchdowns.

Burmeister was ranked the No. 28 quarterback and was a top 50 player out of the state of California at No. 41. San Diego State offered him during the original recruitment however, it was under a different coaching staff.

Programs such as Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Oregon, South Carolina, and UCLA were interested as well.

Braxton Burmeister enters the transfer portal

Virginia Tech quarterback Braxton Burmeister entered the transfer portal on Dec. 20, On3’s Matt Zenitz confirmed. With the move, he is set to play for his third school in the past six seasons.

Burmeister immediately left the program, not practicing before the bowl game against Maryland.

The Hokies finished the 2020 season with a 6-6 record, earning a trip to the Pinstripe Bowl against Maryland. Virginia Tech parted ways with coach Justin Fuente with two games remaining. It’s possible that may have contributed to Braxton Burmeister’s decision to enter the transfer portal.

Virginia Tech hired Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry and Fuente’s replacement.

The move leaves Connor Blumrick and true freshman Tahj Bullock as the only two available scholarship quarterbacks for the bowl matchup against Maryland. Backup quarterback Knox Kadum entered the transfer portal on Dec. 1.
