Sean Farnham calls out Duke for standing against court-storming after rushing the field following upset of Clemson
There has been a lot of conversation surrounding court storming following the injury to Duke big man Kyle Filipowski. Almost everyone associated with college sports is in agreement that what happened to the Blue Devils’ star player was unfortunate, and some measures should be taken to prevent instances like that from happening in the future. And ESPN college basketball analyst Sean Farnham agrees with that. However, the former UCLA Bruin recently took exception to some of the comments coming from Duke.
As most individuals know, the Blue Devils are standard bearers when it comes to college basketball. But on the gridiron, not so much. So it puzzled Farnham to hear Duke condemn storming and students celebrating an upset victory after the Blue Devils did just that in September of 2023.
“You listen to Duke come out now and they say they’re against it and there shouldn’t be court storming,” he began. “I did not hear that on September 4th 2023 when their football team knocked off Clemson and their entire student section ran out onto the football field. I heard their coach actually sit there and say, ‘This is what college athletics is all about. This is a moment for our program to be seen.’”
What Duke is to ACC basketball is identical to what the Clemson Tigers are to ACC football. Clemson, under Dabo Swinney, has been a perennial power in college football, winning a handful of national championships (two) and conference championships (eight) over the past 16 seasons. So to most, the way Duke, who has zero national championships and conference championships, celebrated following their 28-7 victory over the ACC’s gridiron Goliath is more than understandable. As such, Farnham doesn’t see it as fair that Duke is calling out Wake Forest storming the court when they are fans of storming the field.

Seth Greenberg lists suggestions to limit court storming injuries
While there are some rules in play to limit and or prevent court storms from happening, ESPN college basketball expert and former longtime head coach Seth Greenberg doesn’t believe they are doing enough, which led him to create a list of solutions that should make everyone happy.
During the halftime of North Carolina‘s home matchup against the Miami Hurricanes, Greenberg revealed his three suggestions to prevent the Filipowski incident from happening again.
“First and foremost, you wanna court storm? That’s great; the game ends, give me one minute,” said Greenberg. “I call it the one-minute grace period. One minute to give the visiting team a chance to get off the court. Once that one-minute passes, the buzzer goes off; here come students. They run to the middle of the floor, take pictures, hug, and jump up and down. Life is good.”
