SEC announces Week 12 Players of the week honors

Week 12 was another exciting one across college football. There were some intriguing matchups across the SEC, leading to some big performances. Following the Week 12 honors, the SEC has named its Players of the Week.

SEC Week 12 offensive honors

Offensive Player of the Week: Alabama QB Bryce Young

Young set an Alabama record with 559 passing yards in a win over Arkansas. He led the Crimson Tide to a close 42-35 victory over Arkansas on Saturday. Young completed 31 of his 40 passes for the 559 yards and five touchdowns with a passer rating of 236.1. He showed off his explosiveness with 13 plays of at least 20 yards, including 20, 79, 32, and 40-yard touchdowns. Young also was five-of-six on third down for 100 yards and a touchdown. He is one of the SEC’s players of the week and a Heisman favorite through Week 12.

Offensive Linemen of the Week: Ole Miss OT Caleb Warren, South Carolina RG Jovaughn Gwyn

Ole Miss totaled 470 offensive yards in a win against Vanderbilt on Saturday. Warren was part of an offensive line that paved the way for five yards per rush. The line also helped quarterback Matt Corral throw for 300 yards for the fourth time this year.

South Carolina came away with a close 21-17 win over Auburn, and Gwyn starred in the victory. He graded out at 92 percent while recording three knockdown blocks. South Carolina had 306 yards of offense including 149 rushing yards.

SEC defensive honors

Defensive Player of the Week: Alabama linebacker Henry To’oTo’o

To’oTo’o was everywhere in Alabama’s win over Arkansas. He led Alabama with 13 tackles, including eight solo. To’oTo’o also had three tackles for loss and two sacks. His performance also earned him Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week honors in addition to being one of the SEC’s players of Week 12.

Defensive Lineman of the Week: Missouri DL Trajan Jeffcoat

Jeffcoat had a strong performance for Missouri in a win over Florida on Saturday. He racked up four tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and one quarterback hurry. Missouri forced six three-and-outs while holding Florida to 93 yards on the ground.

Special Teams/Freshman honors

Special Teams Players of the Week: Tennessee WR/KR Velus Jones Jr, Missouri K Harrison Mevis

Jones put together 246 all-purpose wins in Tennessee’s 60-14 win over South Alabama. On special teams, he had 47 yards on three punt returns and a 96-yard kick return for a touchdown. Jones’ career kickoff return yardage is now 2,851, which leads active FBS players. He also currently leads the SEC with 28.11 yards per kickoff return and 13.88 yards per punt return.

Mevis scored Missouri’s first nine points with field goal makes from 39, 46, and 31 yards in the first half. He ultimately went three-for-four on field goal attempts in Missouri’s win. Mevis also made his only extra point attempt. He currently is 17-of-19 on field goals this season, including a perfect three-for-three on 50+ yard attempts.

Freshman of the Week: South Carolina FB Trai Jones

Jones is traditionally an offensive lineman, but South Carolina has used him as a fullback this season to block. In Saturday’s win over Auburn, he caught a three-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 14-14 entering halftime. It was the first time Jones has touched the ball in a game in his career.
