Georgia and Alabama will meet in the SEC Championship on Saturday, with College Football Playoff implications on the line.

Entering the SEC title game, Georgia is ranked No. 1, while Alabama is ranked No. 8 in the latest CFP poll.

There has been speculation that the SEC could miss out on a College Football Playoff spot if Alabama beats Georgia this weekend. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey joined The Pat McAfee Show on Friday and was asked about there being a chance the SEC is left out of the College Football Playoff.

“As I recall, the saying ‘There’s a chance’ came from Dumb and Dumber, which may be a good description of that observation,” Sankey said. “You know, people who know and understand football don’t have a doubt about our status.”

The top eight right now consists of Georgia, Michigan, Washington, Florida State, Oregon, Ohio State, Texas and Alabama.

If the Crimson Tide beat Georgia they will certainly move up, but just how much remains to be seen. No matter the outcome, Sankey believes the SEC will be represented in the playoff.

“You can look this year – sure, we lost some nonconference games. But this is not a one-week evaluation. This is a season evaluation,” Sankey said. “And you watch how teams perform, how they improve, how they win big games, how they win close games, how they figure it out. And I think the winner of this game tomorrow, and in fact both teams, depending on the outcome, will be fully under consideration.”

There’s no doubt that other conferences will be upset if Alabama gets in, particularly if the Crimson Tide beat out Texas for a spot in the CFP after the Longhorns beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa during the regular season.

Either way, there’s no doubt there’s a ton at stake in Atlanta on Saturday. Greg Sankey is looking forward to watching the game and seeing Alabama and Georgia make their case for the College Football Playoff.

“The beauty of playing these games, and the reason there’s so much interest is, as I look at all the analytics, this is like the one conference championship game where there’s a lot of doubt about who’s going to win,” Sankey said. “It’s going to be intense, competitive. There’s a lot on the line. But no matter what comes, we deserve at least one team in the College Football Playoff. We’ve proven that this year and the last nine. There shouldn’t be any confusion about that, and we’ll see how it goes.”
