SEC names Basketball Players of the Week after tip-off of season
The SEC has announced their first players of the week from the start of the basketball season over the last week.
In a release on Monday, the Southeastern Conference named Auburn’s Johni Broome as SEC Player of the Week and Texas’ Tre Johnson as SEC Freshman of the Week.
Broome, a Preseason All-American and All-SEC First Teamer, lived up to it to start his fifth collegiate season. He averaged a line of 16 points, eight rebounds, 3.5 blocks, 2.5 assists, and 1.5 steals for the Tigers. He did so while shooting 57.7% overall from the field. That helped Auburn to one of the more impressive starts to the season in the entire country with a 51-point win over Vermont and a five-point win in a top-dozen matchup at a neutral site against Houston.
Johnson, a Preseason All-SEC Third Teamer, began his college career with the Longhorns by being their leading scorer in both games so far. He is averaging 28.5 ppg. on highly efficient splits of 55.3% shooting overall and 55.6% from three. He has also posted 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals. That has been during a 1-1 start for Texas after an opening loss to Ohio State and then a 31-point win over Houston Christian.

Broome and Johnson were the SEC top two performers over the first week of the season. There will be many more to come, including likely for these two, with the year having just begin in college hoops.
