SEC Power Rankings updated after Week 6 of college football
The latest SEC Power Rankings were updated after Week 6 of the 2023 college football season, via our On3 experts.
Safe to say, there was not much movement this week after some intriguing results. Yes, there were some questions answered, but it didn’t cause shattering movement in how these teams are viewed after Week 6.
Let’s dive into the latest SEC Power Rankings courtesy of our panel of On3 experts.
1. Georgia (6-0)
Georgia is back, well, the Bulldogs never really left exactly. A 51-13 win over Kentucky just proved how dominant this team could be when it’s firing on all cylinders.
No change here this week. This is still the best team in the SEC and until they lose, it’ll be hard to prove otherwise.
2. Alabama (5-1)
Alabama won again, further erasing the loss to Texas from its memory. However, it was a close one against Texas A&M.
Maybe there are still some questions about the Crimson Tide. But one thing’s for sure, quarterback Jalen Milroe is improving each week as he went over 300 yards and tossed three touchdowns Saturday.
3. Ole Miss (5-1)
Ole Miss squeaked one out against Arkansas, a team that has its own problems right now. But the Rebels found a way to win so they stayed in the No. 3 spot.
If it weren’t for the loss to Alabama, Ole Miss’ lone loss by the way, we’re talking about a potential playoff team. Kind of mind-boggling isn’t it? But this team might not sniff the SEC Championship Game.
4. Tennessee (4-1)
Tennessee is still 4-1 on the season with a lone loss to Florida. That stinks doesn’t it? But the Volunteers had a week off.
And with a week off, the Volunteers didn’t move a spot through the halfway point of the season. This is still one of the better teams in the SEC, but the Georgia game looms large later this year.
5. LSU (4-2)
LSU might’ve tumbled down this list if it lost to Missouri this weekend. Jayden Daniels was the hero once again and led the comeback victory.
There are still concerns about the Tigers’ defense. If those aren’t answered, a couple more losses could come up on the schedule at this point.
6. Texas A&M (4-2)
The Aggies would’ve made things a lot more interesting if they pulled off the upset over Alabama. Alas, they didn’t.
It was mostly a solid game for Texas A&M considering the circumstances. So in that case, the team didn’t move in the power rankings. But it’s getting closer in the middle.
7. Kentucky (5-1)
Kentucky would’ve dropped a spot this week, but it has a win over the next team on this list. That’s how bad the Georgia loss was this weekend.
The Wildcats were a fresh top 20 team in the country but just got flatlined by the two-time champs. At a certain point, not much you can do about that.
8. Florida (4-2) (+1)
The Gators got the win over Vanderbilt, 38-14, as expected. A loss there and Billy Napier’s seat might’ve reached volcanic levels, at least from the fan base.
But Florida took care of business and improved to 4-2. CFP and SEC title hopes might not be there yet, but perhaps Florida can start getting a streak going down the stretch.
9. Missouri (5-1) (-1)
This was a huge missed opportunity by the Tigers. This 49-39 loss is going to sting for a bit. Eli Drinkwitz had a huge chance.

However, instead of a signature win, Missouri lost its first game of the year. By no means is the season over. But a 6-0 Drinkwitz team would’ve been big news going into the second half of the season.
10. Auburn (3-2)
The Tigers had a bye week so the rules dictate Auburn not move up or down in the rankings. Okay, that’s not actually a rule.
SEC teams as a whole this week did not move so Auburn stood pat while not playing a game. Right now, Hugh Freeze’s squad is halfway to bowl eligibility in his first year. A good first step in the rebuild.
11. South Carolina (2-3)
The Gamecocks also had a week off, one of three teams in the conference to be on a bye. Shane Beamer and company are 2-3 on the season, which is not exactly good.
Can the season still be salvaged? Sure, there are seven games remaining to turn it around. Coming up next? A home date with the Florida Gators.
12. Arkansas (2-4)
The loss to Ole Miss was discussed above but from the Arkansas perspective, this one hurts. Ole Miss scored 10 points in the fourth quarter when the Razorbacks had a shot.
KJ Jefferson threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns but also tossed two interceptions. Also, the Arkansas run game was non-existent. Raheim Sanders ran eight times for 15 yards.
13. Mississippi State (3-3)
Despite getting a win, Mississippi State did not move up in the rankings this week. Perhaps the Bulldogs can jump the Razorbacks with a win on October 21.
The Bulldogs improved to 3-3 but beat out Western Michigan, a non-conference opponent, 41-28. Nothing overly impressive right now, but Mississippi State might have a chance to move up soon.
14. Vanderbilt (3-5)
As stated above, Vanderbilt was overmatched against Florida and fell to 2-5 on the season. What was once thought of as a potential breakout season, the Commodores need four wins in their last five games to make the postseason.
The next two games in three weeks are brutal: Georgia at home and on the road against Ole Miss. A bowl game might not be in the cards this year for Clark Lea.
Well, with Week 6 in the books there was movement going into the midseason point of the year. But Week 7 could shake things up as we get into the meat of October.
