Several Indiana State football players involved in three-fatality accident

Indiana State University has announced several members of their football team were involved in a single vehicle, three-fatality accident early Sunday morning.

“It is with great sorrow that Indiana State University announces that police are working to positively identify three people who died in a single-vehicle accident early Sunday morning,” announced Indiana State. “Police said there were five people total in the vehicle. They are all believed to be ISU students, including several football players.”

As the school wrote, five people in total were in the aforementioned vehicle. After the terrible news became public, ISU President Dr. Deborah J. Curtis released a statement.

“This is a terrible tragedy,” Curtis said, via the school’s website. “As we are waiting on additional details from authorities investigating this accident, our hearts go out to the families and friends of the students involved.”

According to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, “the crash happened around 1:30 a.m. when the vehicle left a roadway and hit a tree,” per WRTV Indianapolis.

“Deputies found the vehicle on fire when they arrived,” wrote Michelle Kaufman of WRTV. “Three people in the car died at the scene, while the other two were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.”

In the immediate aftermath, Indiana State has postponed their women’s soccer match that had been scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. at the school’s Memorial Stadium.

Indiana State began their fall semester on August 16, and their football season is slated to begin on Thursday, Sept. 1 against North Alabama.

Once more information becomes available, Indiana State wrote they will share it. Until then, the thoughts and prayers of the collegiate athletics world are with the families and friends of everyone involved in the accident.
